Winifred Atwell, a classically trained pianist, was born in Tunapuna, Trinidad, and was the youngest girl to win the LRSM in Trinidad. She arrived in Britain in 1946. In order to further her studies she played piano rags on the theatre circuit, eventually signing with the Bernard Delfont Agency. She began recording for DECCA in 1951 and millions of copies of her sheet music were sold. She performed at Royal Variety performances and made many TV
appearances.
